Mariano Rodriguez

Mariano Rodriguez (1912 - 1990) was active/lived in Cuba, Mexico.  Mariano Rodriguez is known for Abstract watercolor figure and still life painting, teaching.

Born in Havana, Cuba, Mariano Rodríguez was interested in painting and drawing since childhood. He studied in Mexico under the direction of Mexican painter Manuel Rodríguez Lozano. Mariano then returned to Cuba, devoting himself entirely to the development of his painting.

In 1937 he was appointed assistant professor at the Escuela Libre de Pintura.

Mariano's technique bore a close resemblance to that of the modern Mexicans but he then decided to experiment in chromatic valuations.

His works have been exhibited at the Brooklyn Museum and in the Museum of Art in San Francisco. His watercolors are in the permanent collection of the Museum of Modern Art in New York.

In 1992 his work was included in Lam and his contemporaries: 1938-1952, exhibition held at the Studio Museum of Harlem and was subject of a retrospective at the Museo Dolores Olmedo in Mexico City.
